In the best of taste / En el mejor de los gustos

I went to the gym Wednesday. It was a surprisingly good workout and I hope it inspired me to get back into the swing of things. As far as other excitement, I had our three air-conditioners serviced Tuesday.

We have ductless split systems — comprising three wall-mounted units in the apartment and three condensor units on the terrace. In past years, we’ve had a company come to service them. Last year we realized that all the guy was doing was cleaning the filters. We could have, and have, done that ourselves! The bedroom condensor was making a lot of intermittent noise and we could see mold in different places on all six units. So I asked Jose, owner of Mesón Salvador, for a recommendation. He knows everyone. He immediately gave me a name and number — another José (José Manuel) — and he told me to let him know we were friends. In the meantime, a hose starting leaking on the terrace and we stopped using that unit in the bedroom. José Manuel took everything apart, cleaning the units completely. They look as good as new. And they are totally quiet now. To top it off, he was 1/3 the price of the guy who simply washed the filters and left.

We’re off to Mesón Salvador for coffee to get out of Isabel’s way. The cats tricked San Geraldo into giving them treats before I got out of bed this morning. He forgot it was Isabel Day, which means she gives them their treats. I forgot last week. I’ll let her double-dose them today. They drive her crazy if she doesn’t. One week, I told her to not give them treats because they already had them. They lied and told her it wasn’t true. Rounding off last week’s wander around Málaga, here are some other tasteful things we found.

.

• Do you see what we saw?
• ¿Ves lo que vimos?
• A pencil eraser with a mistake built in.
• We stopped at Vicens, the turrón specialty shop that has a great selection of sugar-free sweets for me and dark chocolate-covered raisins for San Geraldo.
• Al was having the time of his life, eating whatever he liked. But, after he bought lemon turrón, I took him to the pharmacy for a box of antacid liquid in individual packets. A perfect pairing.

  1. Have you watched The Incredible Dr. Poll? About a veterinarian in Michigan? The alligator looks like something he could fix, pigs do that from time to time.

  2. I’m now anonymous…having trouble logging in to WordPress to comment…starting to become more effort than enjoyment…

    1. Frank:
I gave up on commenting on WordPress or Blogger from my iPad. Almost never works. Argh!

  3. We will be needing to set up our AC unit very soon…….the next 4 days are forecast to be at the extreme humidity level here. Bring on ‘fall’!! There, I said it! lol

  4. I think I saw what you saw but I’m trying to unsee it.
Nothing worse than AC trouble in summer, unless it’s having a mechanic do a cursory cleaning of filters. We, too, have a friend who knows everyone and he’s our go-to when we have a specific issue to fix; never fails.

    1. Bob:
I knew I could count on you. It’s really awkward having to explain it. Al and I both gasped when we saw it.

    1. Debra:
I don’t know why I didn’t think to ask José for a reference in the first place.

  5. LOL — like Bob, I’m pretty sure I saw what you saw but I’m trying not to go there! What a strange toy. I still like Al’s nails.

    1. Steve:
I’m relieved that you and Bob saw what we immediately saw. Al had rainbow nails for Pride month.

  6. Great to find someone reliable for the AC units!
I’m visiting my sister in Vermont, enjoying her fluffy calico cat, and just showed her Moose and Dudo’s pictures 😉

    1. Judy C:
Oh, I hope you’re having a great time in Vermont with your sister. What a glorious place. I’m sure the calico cat is more cooperative than Moose and Dudo. Al only got to pet them by giving them special treats every day.

  7. Both of our dogs are liars, too. Poppy has already learned that from her big brother George!

  8. Air conditioning is a complete rarity in homes in the UK – during those two fiery hot days this week, however, I was in the office and the aircon there was set to “fridge”! It was fab…

Dragon testicles! Al’s nails! More sweets! Cute cats! All’s well with the world, then. Jx

    1. Jon:
I can’t imagine days without AC in that heat. One good thing about your work this week. And, yes, dragon testicles. But what else?

  9. DIY is a good idea. However, any existing insurance policy would require certificates from registered professionals so the potential future claims could be backed up by regular maintenance claims. So it is getting tricky.
These sweet treats look yummy to me too!

    1. Roentare:
We’re very happy we have what look, sound, and work like brand new AC units. I keep looking at the candy shop photos (I have more). Wish I had the candy.

  10. Whatever you’re doing at the gym…it’s working. 🙂
Cat’s are wonderful but quite sly and deceptive. I’d never let one do my taxes.

    1. Sassybear:
Well, I wouldn’t let a cat manage my money, but I might let him do my taxes. (Honestly, no, we’re nauseatingly honest.)
