Well lit / Bien iluminado

La versión en español está después de la versión en inglés.

I know fireworks are not as popular as they used to be considering the damage they do to many pets (and people) and to the environment. When George W. Bush’s Iraq War began in 2003, I remember watching the bombings on television and thinking that, from a distance, it looked so much like fireworks, and I couldn’t imagine surviving that and ever again seeing fireworks as innocent entertainment. That being said, I still watch and our two cats don’t mind them.

So here are a few examples of what we saw this year. You can see the well-lit Virgin of Carmen floating on the water in the lower center of all the photos. As for me, I just wish I could get well lit. I can’t remember my last time.

We are approaching peak season here. If a restaurant isn’t full for dinner in August, that restaurant is not worth trying. I innocently phoned Mesón Salvador for a 9:00 reservation last night not realizing it was already nearly 8. They of course were accommodating and had a table for us. At 10:30. We declined and will start planning better.

No recuerdo mi última vez.

• I was in the mood for Meson Salvador’s goat cheese salad.
• Me apetecía la ensalada de queso de cabra del Mesón Salvador.
• Moose: “The summer people are here.”
• Moose: “La gente del verano está aquí.”
• “Oh no you didn’t!”
• “¡Oh no, no lo hiciste!”

  1. Boud here. That coverage of missiles at the start of the Iraq war caused me a day of PTSD. We were in a local bar, and I had to leave right away.

    1. Boud:
I can’t imagine what it’s like to live through that, especially at such a young age.

  2. I am surprised Meson Salvador doesn’t keep a standing Mitchell and SG reservation.

I love Moose’s “Summer People” face.

    1. Bob:
We’re no longer reliable enough! If there’s any way they can squeeze us in, they do. Moose can be so crotchety.

    1. Debra:
In past years, they actually climbed high on their kitty condo on the terrace and watched.

  3. I still love fireworks. We used to go en masse to the Thames for the traditional free Lord Mayor’s fireworks display every November, until the po-faced powers-that-be cancelled it for good in 2017 on “safety grounds”. Sigh.

London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks are some of the biggest and best in the world, but that’s a paid ticket-only event, we and and “our gang” watch it on telly at our NYE party. Not quite the same.

Great to see Fuengirola’s display is still spectacular – and what a prime view you have of it! You should sell tickets… Jx

    1. Jon:
Selling tickets is a great idea. Although people can just stand anywhere on the pavement or the beach for free.

  4. Fireworks can be very cool. There is no doubt about that. You have such a good eye for photography. I wonder what Stella Maris thinks of all that noise.
The last picture of Moose is the best.
And finally- I would always be in the mood for that salad.

    1. Ms. Moonsigh:
Thanks for the compliment about the photography! I thought that Moose pose was hilarious. I’ll have that salad again one day or night this week.

  5. I would love enjoying the fireworks from your viewpoint. You don’t have to deal with all that smoke.
    Sweet Moose. 😸

    1. Kelly:
I like not having to deal with the crowds, although the oohs and aahs are fun. Moose IS sweet.

  6. Moose’s face says it all, LOL! Your fireworks photos are great — you’re fortunate to have a ringside seat for watching!

Did you receive the email I sent a couple of days ago? With the Cloudstrike outage, I’m wondering if it got lost in the ether!

    1. Tundra Bunny:
Too bad the procession doesn’t go right in front of our building! The ether the email got lost in was in my head!

    1. Mistress Borghese:
Sparklers were all we were allowed when I was a kid (my parents didn’t know about the cherry bombs).

  7. Beautiful fireworks. Yes the Summer people are here indeed I met them. More are coming.

    1. Laurent:
Well, your summer people give you some interesting employment. Ours mostly give us headaches. Fuengirola does an impressive job with the fireworks.

    1. Adam:
Isn’t that interesting that the local ones didn’t go over this year.

  8. Great shots! It’s hard to get good photos of fireworks. Now you’ve got me thinking how depressing it would be to run a restaurant in Spain and not be full in August.

    1. Steve:
It must be an awful feeling to be one of those barely occupied restaurants right now. Mesón Salvador has a crowd on the pavement at 11:30 at night. I find I get better fireworks shots with my iPhone 13 plus than I get with my Canon. And my Canon even has a fireworks setting.

    1. Urspo:
One of our local restaurants, Primavera, makes the best French fries. I think they bake them briefly before frying. Organic potatoes, too. Unbelievably good.

  9. The rednecks in Florida haven’t gotten word yet that fireworks aren’t as popular these days.

    Love,
    Janie

The rednecks in Florida haven’t gotten word that the South lost the Civil War.
