Last Chance Texaco / Última Oportunidad Texaco

Some weeks ago, Tynan and his daughter, Paula, went to a virtual reality exposition on the Paseo sponsored by Caixa Bank and called Symphony. I had planned to go, but it’s 45 minutes long and, given my current condition, I don’t think I’d do well in a pair of VR specs for that amount of time. I have until 2 September to decide.

Surf was high and our nearest summer water park (there are two) got torn apart. I’ve seen those withstand much more powerful surf and winds (click here). So I’ve missed my last chance for Water World this year. (No great loss.) I might soon miss my last chance for the Virtual Reality Symphony.

Before going out for dinner last night, I checked the weather. The real temperature was 29C/84F but felt like 34C/93F — “in the shade” (although it was 9:15 p.m., so I don’t know where there wasn’t shade). And there’s no end in sight. Sunny and sometimes hazy, hot, and humid for the foreseeable future. It’s usually very pleasant here this time of year. My doctor Wednesday did tell me to be especially careful in this heat and humidity keeping in mind my illness (how can I forget) and my meds. However, I did complete sets of stretches in the air-conditioned apartment both Wednesday and Thursday, as well as some isometric exercises.

I had hoped beyond hope to get to the “new” Roman baths this morning but, again, I slept late. I’ll hope again for tomorrow. I might take the train to Plaza Mayor this afternoon to shop for Polo shirts for The Kid Brother. They‘re the only shirts he wears, summer and winter, so I like to keep him supplied. There won’t be much of a selection before my winter trip and I want to shop before the summer selection is gone. Another last chance perhaps.

• There was a better, complete view at 5 this morning, but I went back to bed.
• All that’s left afloat. I have no idea where everything else ended up. Check your shorelines.

    1. Adam:
Tynan said this experience was incredible. I’ve never had the opportunity, and may pass this one up.

  1. Nothing worse than that heat/humidity taking the life out of one. Maybe your ‘cooler’ days are just ahead. Be patient. Our temps have fallen/thank the gods the past two days…..this morning a lovely/comfortable 10C.

    1. Jim:
The 10-day forecast shows more of the same. Argh! But if it ever hits 10C here I’m complaining all over again!

  2. I wore VR googles when I went to the Van Gogh exhibit in DC a couple of years ago. It was amazing! I know you are looking forward to cooler temperatures! So am I!

  3. Those flowers are stunning, sez Boud. I sympathize with the stress of heat and humidity, and hope yours passes soon.

    1. Boud:
The flowers sure help. The desert roses have been blooming almost non-stop since March 2023!

  4. I wore VR glasses once … I felt very disoriented/ I mean, it was amazing, but it felt very uneasy to me.

We had a week of cool and now were in a week of hot and headed back to very cool by next week. I’m hoping the cool sticks around!

    1. Bob:
I’ve always heard how disorienting the glasses can be. Still haven’t given it a try.

  5. God. What a great song. I love Rickie Lee Jones.
So- are you having FOMO? I don’t know that I’d go to that immersive experience. Maybe. Glen got a VR whatever-you-call-it and I’ve tried it for at least sixty seconds. Hell, real reality is more than I can handle.
I’m sure the water parks took a hit on that one. How did we ever manage to have fun in the ocean with only a blow-up float?
Your desert rose is a glory.

    1. Ms. Moonsigh:
I, too, love Rickie Lee Jones. Yes, I’m having FOMO. But, reality, what a concept (as Robin Williams said). When I was a kid, blow-up floats weren’t even permitted on our beaches because of the risk of being swept away. They are now permitted at those same beaches. Maybe they just don’t care anymore. The desert roses have been blooming since March 2023 except for a recent one-week break. Unbelievable.

  6. I’m with Mrs Moon – real reality’s hard enough going, without adding “virtual” into it!

The desert rose is utterly remarkable! I wonder if they’ll ever rest? Jx

    1. Jon:
The desert roses took about a week off recently and I thought they would rest a bit. But, no!

  7. I do envy your sun, if not your heat. That orchid certainly is happy! I guess you could always try the VR symphony and bail early if it gets too uncomfortable.

    1. Steve:
That’s what I thought about the VR symphony. But just walking the 10 or 15 minutes in the heat has put me off now. I have two more days to try it and I just might!

  8. Ah yes, that heat and HUMIDITY can just sap all the strength right out of me. It just messes up the whole day. But that orchid and the desert rose are so gorgeous! Wishing you cooler days soon. Olivia

    1. Olivia:
Currently feels like 92. We have seriously had enough of this. But wait a month and we’ll be complaining it’s too cold. The orchid surprised me this year. The desert roses have been amazing.

  9. I love a good polo shirt and wore them exclusively for a while. I always hide out inside during really high and really low outdoor temperatures. I am a creature of comfort.
