A man a plan / Un hombre un plan

La versión en español está después de la versión en inglés.

Referring to the building of the Panama Canal the title should be “A man a plan a canal Panama” which is also a palindrome. If you read it backwards (in English only) it says the same thing. I’m a man with a plan, though not a canal. Mine is a floor plan. It’s not my best work. But it gives you an idea of the new apartment’s layout and it helps us to prearrange furniture so I can more easily direct the movers. Be sure to click the image (if you actually want to see it).

Elena’s Sunday lunch was another success and she even served something new to her. Seasoned mince (ground beef), rolled with ham and then wrapped in bacon. So good. Of course, she made her famous roast potatoes because none of us can get enough and we ask for them every time. Her sister Isa was there, so there was not a single potato left behind. I think I saw Elena reach across to slap her hand once. And we finished with what we would call an ice cream cake. Paula was there having just returned from travel for her advanced musical studies. Have I mentioned she’s gifted? Alexander came home to change his clothes and go back out to surf. Family time can be a joy.

Sunday evening at Tapa y Tai was also delicious, but any time spent with Lulu (and her friend Rita) is delicious. Lulu is already planning a visit to Córdoba to see us. Lulu does get around.

San Geraldo measured our current cat carriers, so he could order new ones. The current ones are cheap and flimsy and the cats can push the doors open (and off) easily. Dudo was traumatized when he saw the carriers. He got over it quickly when I gave him his next treat. But I do think he’ll be wary from now on. We’ve been playing a lot with his string lately (well, one of) and he gifts it to me when he thinks it’s time for another treat. So generous.

Now enjoy the food pictures and take a walk through our new apartment.

  1. I was just thinking about you this morning and wondering how you are going to move the cats to your new abode. I have never had cats as I am deathly allergic to them, so it is not in my experience. I have heard stories about trying to get them into a cat carrier. And then I read your post! I did look at your floor plan. You are certainly an organized soul. I would have been very haphazard about it all, and that’s not good.

    1. Michael,
Oh the cats. We have a feline pheromone spray from the vet that does seem to calm them enough for us to get them in their travel cages. But it will be a drive filled with non-stop complaining. I always do floor plans and label the rooms at the other end. It makes it so much easier and it’s fun for me.

      1. Boud,
I love drawing floor plans and scale model furniture. Our moves tend to be much less hectic than most.

  2. How nice that the terrace is right off the bedroom. I always thought it would be luxurious to wake up and head to a balcony for morning coffee. Very nice floorplan…I can see the flow now, very nice. Do you have to downsize at all some belongings or is this bigger?

    1. Mistress Borghese,
I would love that, but it’s only off the living room. We’re giving away one bedroom cabinet because we have loads of storage in the new place. Other than that, just about everything is coming with us. Well, except for most of the stuff on the terrace. Our current apartment joy has 2 closets ( and not good ones). New place has excellent closets and built-ins. Yay!

  3. You know how much I love a floorplan, so thanks for that and the food porn.
Our cats always get leery when the carriers come out, but a treat does help!

    1. Bob,
We’ve got that pheromone spray that helped with Dudo. Treats don’t work… even with these gluttons.

  4. Nice space. Maybe Elena could publish a cookbook.
Early in my housing career a friend sold a house for a woman who was a cat fancier, she had about 25 of them. They moved them by pulling Ruth’s car into the garage, rolling down a window, putting all of the cats in the car, closing the window, driving to the new house parking in the garage closing the garage door and opening the doors to the car. No people or cats were harmed in the move. Though Ruth traded that car shortly after that sale. (A red Olds 88 with a diesel engine.)

  5. I have literally no ability to look at schematics and envision reality. I can’t read maps. I mean, I can read them, but I can’t follow them. If I sit down to draw something- like, say- a car- I absolutely cannot remember what a car looks like. I mean, I know it has tires. But how do those doors fit in there? I also have a bit of face-blindness and I think it may all be related.. This is all to say that your floor plan looks excellently done to me but I’m still at a loss.
Meat, and lots of it. My god that looks good. And the potatoes? Heaven. I have a feeling my hands would have both been slapped more than once.
    Yours truly…Ms. M. Sigh

    1. M. Sigh,
I have a thing for maps and floor plans. So does my brother. He can’t read beyond a 1st grade level but he can follow a map. I now have a version of the floor plan with furniture and it’s all finalized in Photoshop. Elena loves to host. She makes it look so easy. Her potatoes really are the best. She didn’t actually slap Isa but she threatened to, jokingly. Isa LOVES potatoes. And Isa makes the best croquettes, her mothers recipe.

  6. Elena’s roast potatoes look scrumptious — like Ms. Sigh, my hands would have been slapped more than once too, LOL! The meat dish reminds me of a Tudor-era pie that contained pork, venison, pheasant, duck, etc that sliced into a different combo for each diner!

Your diagram illustrates very clearly the nice flow and lay-out of your new apartment. Now I’m even more curious to see how you and SG paint, decorate and place your furniture!

    1. Tundra Bunny:
SG loves potatoes, too, and even I love these! That Tudor-era pie sounds so good. We wanted to paint before we move but we’re just a bit overwhelmed with everything else, so we’ll wait and make it more difficult!

  7. Spanish questions for you, Señor!
Do you hear, “Así-Así” in Spain, as a response to asking how you’re doing? This is a repeated discussion in one of the Spanish Teachers groups on FB. It is taught in some textbooks, but many native speakers chime in to say that they NEVER hear that, and that the equivalent to something like, “Not bad, so-so” is “más o menos”. But… another person from Puerto Rico says that “así-así” is used there, and I thought that I had heard that it is used in Spain (but the PR person said it is not).
Also… what about using, “Regular” as a way to answer, “¿Cómo estás?” … pretty much meaning, “Fine”. I have the impression (just from observation) that this isn’t really used in Spain, but that it is used in some U.S. areas where Spanish heritage speakers and native speakers live, and maybe in some Latin American countries, and/or Mexico.
    ¡Gracias de antemano!

    1. Judy C,
I’ve heard people use regular more as “ok but not great.” I learned así así in school when I was a kid. I have not once heard it used here. I love when you ask these questions!

  8. Thanks for sharing the floor plan – it looks great! It has some nice long stretches for the kitties to run. I’ll pass on the meat and dessert if I can have a triple portion of potatoes, please.

    1. Kelly,
Yes, the cats will love to run there. I’m not huge on potatoes but I could eat thirds of these.

  9. Wow what a nice apartment well proportioned. I always love apt in Europe, made for people. Wishing you the best in your move. Is it my imagination or do both cats look fat? Too many treats? Everytime you mention Cordoba I always think of Ricardo Montalban and is corinthian leather. I have no idea where that association comes from.

    1. You’re thinking of the Chrysler Cordoba television ads in which Ricardo Montalban promoted the car’s “soft Corinthian leather” seats. I’m just old enough to remember those too, LOL!

    2. Laurent,
Moose remains husky. Dudo is still skinny. Montalban was advertising the Chrysler Cordoba with Corinthian leather (which never existed).

  10. The food looks delicious! Elena needs to go with you, too. I love the floor plan, although I’m a little bit disappointed that we have to step into the hall from the master bedroom to get to the bathroom. I guess I’ll get used to it. I know how the kitties feel. I am traumatized every time Rebekah gets my carrier out. I’m kind of heavy to move, but she insists on it because I’m so badly behaved otherwise. She says you can dress me up but you can’t take my any place. Oh, the shame.

    Love,
    Janie

  11. I’m trying this comment a second time. I got a “nonce verification failed” error the last time. Grrrr…

What I said was, nice floorplan! So professional! Does the cross-hatched wall between the kitchen and salon mean that it’s open, like a bar?

    1. Steve:
Nonce verification failed. That’s upsetting. (Nonce is slang for a pedophile in the UK.) The cross-hatched walls are accordion walls that open out to completely enclose the kitchen (and hide SG’s mess).
