SEVILLANA IS THE traditional Spanish dance that is thought to have its beginnings in 15th-century Castilla in the heart of Spain. The strictly choreographed Sevillana, which is not supposed to be performed solo, is very different from Flamenco, an improvised, expressive dance.
Our friend Pedro teaches Sevillana to his high school students as part of their cultural education. He’s a great dancer and teacher. San Geraldo and I were at Pedro and Kathleen’s house for dinner and Sevillana the other night with two other friends, Nicole and Diego. San Geraldo and I watched the Sevillana lesson because there really wasn’t enough room for our flailing arms and legs. But we can’t wait to learn more. Pedro’s lesson plan is inspired. This year’s is based on the game of football (soccer) and the celebration after the game.
SEVILLANA ES EL baile tradicional español que tiene sus inicios en Castilla del siglo XV. La estricta coreografía de las Sevillanas, la cual se supone que no se puede representar en solitario, lo que la hace muy diferente del Flamenco, un baile improvisado y expresivo. Nuestro amigo Pedro enseña Sevillana a sus estudiantes de secundaria como parte de su educación cultural. Él es un gran bailarín y maestro. San Geraldo y yo estábamos en la casa de Pedro y Kathleen para cenar y Sevillana la otra noche con otros dos amigos, Nicole y Diego. San Geraldo y yo vimos la lección de Sevillana porque realmente no había espacio suficiente para nuestros brazos y piernas agitados. Pero no podemos esperar para aprender más.
