The one that got away / El que se escapó

LAST WEEK, AS I WAS getting ready for an afternoon walk, I looked from the terrace and saw most of the people on the beach standing at the shore and looking in the same direction. A shark? A whale? A cow? (Click here for the cow.)

I immediately hit the beach to find two women with a fishing rod trying to reel something in. Since the water is so shallow there, I wondered if their hook had snagged on something on the sea bottom, although I had no idea what that might be. They got some help. A nice guy who happened to be passing fought for them. After about 10 minutes, he asked for help from two men standing nearby, which caused them to immediately leave. Then someone else pitched in. He reeled with all his might and the line finally broke. I wonder what kind of fish story they all told.

We’ve heard from three of the five company’s holding stocks in my mother’s name. Once we receive confirmation letters at our address here in Spain, the process will be done. However, we received a scanned copy of a letter that’s on its way. It contains our correct Spanish address at the top, but not in the body of the letter where it confirms the change. When it reached the zip / postal code, their system automatically picked up a city in South Carolina to complete the address. San Geraldo phoned and was told the letter was sent to our complete and correct Spanish address. The woman on the line didn’t seem to understand why we might be concerned by the glitch in the letter. Anyway, it was mailed 8 October. Given that SG just received something mailed two months ago from a friend in the States, we’re not holding our breath.

I found online golden-yellow, patterned throw pillows for the living room at half the price of the ones I saw in our local shop (click here). I ordered three. They’re from Maison Du Monde, which has a shop near IKEA, just 15 minutes away. They’ll email me when they’re in. They would have delivered, but the €15 fee seemed like a bit much to pay for three throw pillows. Am I growing more practical or was it just a hiccup? Nah. Just a hiccup — and an excuse to browse the shop and maybe even visit IKEA. So, not even a hiccup.

    1. Debra:
And your comment was followed by Steve saying ”Those fish are beautiful.” Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  1. Those fish are beautiful. I wish I could put them back in the water and have them swim away. I’m glad for the one that escaped! I wonder what the heck she caught?!

And…how did the system automatically choose a city in South Carolina? Do you share a postal code with some place in South Carolina? Or is there a Fuengirola in South Carolina?! That’s very bizarre.

    1. Steve:
Yeah, imagine how much more beautiful those fish were when they were swimming. But they ARE delicious (those were at Mesón Salvador). Yep, our postal code is apparently the same as the zip code in Easley, South Carolina.

  2. Hey, you are getting closer to some kind of resolution at last. My Nana always said, ‘Patience is a virtue.’
You are lucky that you have all that fresh fish available.
Maybe the hook was caught in kelp/seaweed at the bottom…..brings back some childhood memories.

    1. Jim:
As a friend of mine said when someone told her “Patience is a virtue.” “Well, then, I’m the dirtiest whore in town!” I hope she wouldn’t have said it to your nana.

  3. You did it again…a slimy fish up close. It does the same thing for me as bees up close for you!! LMAO! Now had those girls actually caught something, it would have been even funnier if whatever it was pulled the rod right out of their hands and took off.

    1. Mistress Borghese:
Is the slimy fish up close as difficult for you as a frog up close? So much to keep track of!

  4. Similar to your address mixup, our Belize phone number with country code goes to a land line in Arkansas by mistaking the country code for the area code!

I went to a wonderful yoga retreat over the weekend. Eight sessions of yoga and one of zumba dance in all. I hadn’t done zumba in several decades – it was so much fun even though I had to resort to low intensity. I think I will have to try it on my own with online videos. My Fitbit told me I burned 400 calories in that hour! You would be proud of me, Mitchell, – I had no desserts and only 2 half glasses of wine. Thanks for your inspiration!

    1. Wilma:
Arkansas and South Carolina, two places I’d rather not be mistaken for these days. (Although there are some very good people in both.) I just read that Fitbits tend to underestimate how many calories you burn. Great news! The retreat sounds so nice!

  5. The fish with his mouth open looks as if he’s ready to attack, even in death. Maybe the women did hook a cow. We’ll never know.

    Love,
    Janie

  6. The beach doesn’t seem like it would be the greatest place to catch a fish. Especially with the waves hitting the shore like that. Do people do that often?

    1. Kirk:
Oddly, some serious local fishermen are very successful here in the surf, which is kind of creepy to think about when you’re in for a swim.
