Yesterday was a day of culture and beauty in Málaga. The weather was splendid. Sunny, clear, a light breeze. Maybe just a bit warm for hours of wandering in the city. The sweaty shirt was tossed in the laundry basket as soon as I got home. The two new exhibits were exceptional. I have lots of raw photos of the art to edit and share in the coming days.

I first stopped at the Centre for Contemporary Art (no admission fee), which is just a couple of minutes walk from the Centro Alameda train station. Built in 1939 as the Wholesale Market Building, it’s a great space for contemporary art. I just wish they would make the exterior more “artful.” It needs color. The front entrance was closed because another exhibit is being installed and will open tomorrow — a reason to go back soon. I entered through a side door which used to be one of the loading docks. The current temporary exhibit, which will run through 27 August, is worth a second visit (or even a third).

I wasn’t familiar with artist Devan Shimoyama before this exhibit. I am now obsessed. I love his work and would love to know him. This excerpt from Buffalo AKG Art Museum does a good job describing the artist without pigeon-holing him:

“Devan Shimoyama is a Pittsburgh-based contemporary Black visual artist working primarily in self-portraiture and narratives inspired by classical mythology and allegory. He depicts the Black queer male body as something that is both desirable and desirous and explores the mystery and magic in the process of understanding his origins and investigating the politics of queer culture.”

The name of the CAC exhibit is “Tell Me.” Today’s images are close-ups and a few shots from outside. The complete works (in the exhibit) are soon to come. Then it will be on to Málaga’s Pompidou Centre where I saw an exhibition on American artist Sheila Hicks who specializes in weavings and sculptural textile art. Phenomenal.

San Geraldo and I had a late second breakfast today and ran some errands. Isabel was already gone by the time we got home. She gives the cats treats around 12:30. We got home at 1:30 and Dudo followed me around for a bit insisting he hadn’t had anything to eat (there’s dry food all day) since 9:00 this morning. I didn’t fall for it. They get three rounds of treats on Thursdays. Since our second breakfast was so late, I’m going to shortly go for a walk on the beach. And then a stretch and a workout. Having walked so much, I thought I’d take a day off but, although most days are like this here, I still hate to waste the sunshine and beauty.

Tomorrow is my birthday. Do you remember when you giggled any time you heard the number 69 mentioned? I’m not giggling.

Ayer fue un día de cultura y belleza en Málaga. El clima estuvo espléndido. Soleado, claro, una brisa ligera. Tal vez solo un poco de calor para horas de deambular por la ciudad. La camisa sudada fue arrojada en el cesto de la ropa sucia tan pronto como llegué a casa. Las dos nuevas exhibiciones fueron excepcionales. Tengo muchas fotos en bruto del arte para editar y compartir en los próximos días.

Primero me detuve en el Centro de Arte Contemporáneo (sin costo de entrada), que está a solo un par de minutos a pie de la estación de tren Centro Alameda. Construido en 1939 como el Edificio del Mercado Mayorista, es un gran espacio para el arte contemporáneo. Solo desearía que hicieran el exterior más “ingenioso”. Necesita color. La entrada principal se cerró porque se está instalando otra exhibición y se abrirá mañana, una razón para regresar pronto. Entré por una puerta lateral que solía ser uno de los muelles de carga. La exposición temporal actual, que estará abierta hasta el 27 de agosto, merece una segunda visita (o incluso una tercera).

No conocía al artista Devan Shimoyama antes de esta exposición. Ahora estoy obsesionado. Me encanta su trabajo y me encantaría conocerlo. Este extracto del Museo de Arte Buffalo AKG hace un buen trabajo al describir al artista sin encasillarlo:

“Devan Shimoyama es un artista visual negro contemporáneo con sede en Pittsburgh que trabaja principalmente en autorretratos y narraciones inspiradas en la mitología clásica y la alegoría. Representa el cuerpo masculino negro queer como algo que es a la vez deseable y anhelante y explora el misterio y la magia en el proceso de comprensión de sus orígenes e investigación de la política de la cultura queer”.

El nombre de la exhibición del CAC es “Cuéntame”. Las imágenes de hoy son primeros planos y algunas tomas desde el exterior. Las obras completas (en la exposición) están próximas a llegar. Luego será en el Centro Pompidou de Málaga, donde vi una exposición sobre la artista estadounidense Sheila Hicks, que se especializa en tejidos y arte textil escultórico. Fenomenal.

San Geraldo y yo tomamos un segundo desayuno tardío hoy e hicimos algunos mandados. Isabel ya se había ido cuando llegamos a casa. Ella les da golosinas a los gatos alrededor de las 12:30. Llegamos a casa a la 1:30 y Dudo me siguió un rato insistiendo en que no había comido nada (hay comida seca todo el día) desde las 9:00 de esta mañana. No me enamoré. Reciben tres rondas de golosinas los jueves. Como nuestro segundo desayuno fue tan tarde, en breve voy a dar un paseo por la playa. Y luego un estiramiento y un entrenamiento. Habiendo caminado tanto, pensé en tomarme un día libre pero, aunque la mayoría de los días son así aquí, todavía odio desperdiciar el sol y la belleza.

Mañana es mi cumpleaños. ¿Recuerdas cuando te reías cada vez que escuchabas mencionar el número 69? ¡No me estoy riendo.
