A quick hello to you today. We went to Casa Colón for lunch and it was cold. OK, everything’s relative. But 16˚C/61˚F sure felt cold to us. I wore a quilted jacket and an old sweater. One my mother knitted for my father in 1949. I was given the sweater in the 1960s and wore it for years after. But I did eventually outgrow it; my father was 5’8″ to my 6’2″ (until she was in her 80s, my mother always said he was 5’10”; then she admitted to me she had lied).
Spanish style can be super tight, so I’m getting more use out of it now. Below, you can see me before lunch wearing the sweater and then my mother knitting it on the beach in Coney Island in 1949. When I took off my jacket at Casa Colón, Berna (one of the server/bartenders) immediately commented on how cool and beautiful my sweater was. It made me feel great. Sometimes quality really does last. By the way, the temperature is supposed to go down to 2˚C or 3˚C (between 35F and 37F) overnight! Yes, San Geraldo is wearing his long underwear.
Un rápido saludo para ti hoy. Fuimos a Casa Colón a almorzar y hacía frío.
Me hizo sentir genial. A veces la calidad realmente dura. Por cierto, ¡se supone que la temperatura baja a 2˚C o 3˚C (entre 35F y 37F) durante la noche! Sí, San Geraldo lleva su ropa interior larga.

25F here this morning, and bright and sunny. That is one great looking sweater, and a very complex piece of work. Talent runs in the family.
David:
Amazing that the sweater was done early in her life. She was 22 years old. She got even more skilled.
You look good Michi.
Jssw:
Thanks, judyshannonbstreetwhat. The camera was kind this time.
Mitchell, the sweater looks wonderful on you! A 75 year old sweater?? That has to be some sort of record! My grandmother saved a woollen onesie that my dad had worn as a baby and gave it to my sister when she had her baby. The onesie is 90 years old now! Oh, by the way it was -27°C with the windchill here yesterday morning. I would take your chilly anytime!
Robin:
And the sweater is truly like new. Well done, exceptional quality wool, and a lot of good luck. That onesie is a treasure. Minus 27C? I can’t remember the last time I experienced temps that low!
That sweater is great! and you look good in it. Do you have your mother’s smile? Olivia
Olivia:
I don’t know if I have my mother’s smile. She had an overbite that got corrected over the years (crowns, implants, dentures). And I had braces as an adult. I know we resembled each other but I was a cross between both parents. Oddly, I think my smile is my own. (Strange thing to say, but it’s true.)
What a treasure to have that photo of your Mother knitting the sweater you are wearing in the other photo 75 years later! Your Mom was clearly a very accomplished knitter.
Debra:
And that was so early in her knitting skills. She was gifted.
Oh, you really mean an old sweater! 🙂
I remember seeing the photo of your mom knitting it, before, but don’t remember seeing you wearing it. It looks new! And, it’s such a fine knit… I usually think of hand-knit sweaters as being a thick, heavy knit. Oh laaaa laaa!
Judy C:
Here it is: https://movingwithmitchell.com/2013/08/14/its-not-sweater-weather/
My mother’s work was so precise, people would compliment her by saying things looked like they were made by a machine. Some of her knitting is so fine, it looks woven.
Gosh, your mother was a good looking woman! And she surely had a good-looking son.
Ms. Moon
Ms. Moon:
Oh, yeah, we’re a beautiful family! (Groan) A common thing my friends would say was that my parents looked like movie stars. My mother, and therefore I, could point out every single “flaw.”
That’s a great pair of pictures, sweater in progress, then in action! You model it well. We were down to zero f. so 61 seems warm. But everything’s relative.
That wuz Boud.
Boud:
I remember when 61 WAS warm. Then we moved to San Diego and followed with even warmer places and the blood thinned. I have another sweater, from 1948, and a photo of my father wearing it that Christmas.
That jumper looks “as new”! You have obviously never had clothes moths anywhere you’ve lived – we looked under the sofa here this summer, to find the bastards had eaten great swathes of carpet! Luckily, our landlady wasn’t overly perturbed… Jx
PS We had similar temperatures to you last night, but the highest daytime temperature was 7C/45F. However, it is warming up, and we are forecast a sweltering 13C/44F on Xmas Day itself..!
Jon:
We did have moths in a house in New Haven, Connecticut The wool carpets were being devoured when we moved in. Fortunately, they never got to my sweaters! The sweater does look “as new.” It amazes me. Supposed to get up to 16C today. Strange how that now feels cold to us. We’ve been spoiled for too many years. As for you, get out the Speedos.
Looks wonderful! What a treasure to have.
Jim:
It sure has held up well.
That sweater and the wearer have held up nicely over the years.
We were 19-degrees F this morning, Brrrrrrrrrr.
Bob:
When I was thinking how old the sweater was, I had to remember that I’m only 5 years behind. Damn! 19F, that’s -7C. I hope it’s not like that in New York when I‘m there!
You look great in that sweater! I’d be wearing a sweater and a jacket in those temps, too, especially because it’s always breezy here. Poor San Geraldo. He suffers in the cold even more than I do.
Love,
Janie
janiejunebug:
SG hates the cold. I think he’s still in shock from growing up in South Dakota.
Love the sweater!!!!! You can find sweaters that look just like that now from designers, Ox Knits and Mr,Turk. Your mother was ahead of the curve toots!!!! It suits you and looks great.
And the opening picture took my breath away.
Mistress Borghese:
Some fun stuff by Ox Knits and Mr. Turk. I also have an argyle cardigan she made in 1948. It needs new buttons.
What a treasure. A photo of your mom knitting it in 1949, and you wearing the actual sweater.
Shirley:
I know. I was delighted when I found that photo in an old album some years ago.
You look great in your dad’s sweater, and your mom sure looks like she’s enjoying knitting it.
Kirk:
My mother was rarely without some project in her hands.
What a wonderful memory and keepsake! I wear long johns for morning walks with Tasha. Our temperatures are in the single digits these days.
Walt the Fourth:
We used to joke that if it got down below 65F, out came SG’s long johns.
That’s no joking matter! LOL 🙂
Sweater is lovely. SG in long undies… Ooooo, hubba hubba!
wickedhamster:
Oh yeah. A porn fantasy!
😂😂😂
LOVE the sweater! It looks professionally made. I’m so impressed that your mom knitted it — while sitting on a hot beach, no less!
Steve:
She was truly gifted when it came to needlework of any kind. She WAS a professional briefly, paid by a designer to create her samples. She decided it wasn’t fun or worth her time.
Your mom was cute. And I love that East Coast Beach Vibe…can’t put my finger on it, but we had it at Sound View in Connecticut also.
Frank:
Yes, to the East Coast beach vibe. That was in the heart of Coney Island. Near Washington Baths.
Happy Christmas xx
finlaygray:
Wishing you the same, John.
How special to have a photo of her knitting that very sweater! It looks very good on you. I still have sweaters my aunt and mother knitted me (50+ years ago), but nothing that has lasted as long as yours (yet!).
Again, I’m impressed!
Kelly:
I was so excited when I found that photo in one of my parents’ photo albums some years back. It really is amazing that it has lasted so long in perfect condition. It looks like new.
Oh to be in the Spanish sun, you lucky doggos! We have 2 feet of snow on the ground, hoar frost on everything, but the forecast for later this week is 0 Celsius… Happy Festivus, Scoot (and check your email too)!!
Tundra Bunny:
Yay, I did get your email. Just checked and will write back. The Spanish sun in Córdoba is bright but not quite as warm as Málaga’s in winter. It’s currently 8˚C and will go down to 3 overnight. At least it climbs during the day. 18 today, 19 tomorrow. Wishing you a happy Festivus, too!
Me
I had to sign in to WordPress and somehow that “We” comment appeared…weird!
ANYWAY, Merry Christmas to you, SG, Dudo and Moose! xx
J Barlow:
I thought maybe you were simply announcing yourself! Sending best wishes to you, Gregg, and the gang!
Love that sweater!
Sassybear:
Isn’t it amazing? I love it, too.
