The other night, as I was falling asleep, I began to think about the time in 1999 when I was at Gold’s Gym in Palm Springs, trying to look cool and sexy among all the obviously self-confident and stunning gay men (who were not all self-confident nor stunning), and tripped up the stairs alongside a gaggle of cliquish poseurs.
Then I thought about the time I was drunk-sleeping in the back of a friend’s car in 1974 while my friends continued partying at the disco, when I suddenly felt ill, and threw up out the window. The next day my friend complained that some asshole threw up on the side of his car. “What a jerk,” said I.
The only way to get out of that loop was to start singing in my head all of the lyrics to “Move On” from Sunday in the Park with George before segueing into “Another Day” from Rent. So, it was serendipitous that today’s song appeared on my feed.
La otra noche, mientras me quedaba dormido, me puse a pensar en aquella vez en 1999 cuando estaba en el Gold’s Gym de Palm Springs —intentando parecer genial y sexy entre todos aquellos hombres gais que rebosaban seguridad en sí mismos y lucían espectaculares (aunque no todos eran tan seguros ni tan espectaculares)— y tropecé en la escalera justo al lado de un grupito de tipos que iban de sobrados y se daban aires de importancia.
Luego recordé aquella ocasión en 1974 en la que dormitaba borracho en el asiento trasero del coche de un amigo mientras ellos seguían de fiesta en la discoteca; de repente me sentí mal y vomité por la ventanilla. Al día siguiente, mi amigo se quejó de que algún imbécil había vomitado en el lateral de su coche. «Qué cretino», dije yo.
La única forma de salir de ese bucle mental fue empezar a cantar mentalmente toda la letra de «Move On», del musical Sunday in the Park with George (¡que llega a España por primera vez en 2027!), para luego enlazarla con «Another Day», de Rent. Así que fue una feliz coincidencia que la canción de hoy apareciera en mi feed.
