Bright lights, little city / Luces brillantes, pequeña ciudad

La versión en español está después de la versión en inglés.

Spur of the moment, we went to Mesón Salvador for dinner Saturday night. We forgot that it’s a popular spot for office Christmas parties. Not long after we arrived, the terrace filled with two parties totalling about 40 people. Fortunately, our usual spot inside was available and we placed our orders before the madness, which the staff seemed to have completely under control. San Geraldo’s rabo de toro (bull’s tail) was excellent as was my salad of avocados and shrimp. We didn’t stay for coffee or dessert because the noise level and energy had risen beyond our comfort zone. If the noise and energy comes from us, we’re fine — although we’re never that noisy.

You’re probably getting tired of reports on our desert roses. Sorry (not sorry). The first desert rose is still strutting its stuff and the second desert rose has buds. Again!

It’s a bit too strong for my tastes, although I love it in hamburgers.

    1. Debra:
We were inside and the parties were on the terrace and it was still too loud. And they had only just gotten started when we left.

    1. Bob:
The desert roses have made me so happy this year. First thing in the morning, I go out and admire the blooms. Meson Salvador’s terrace is very nice, but we have our favorite inside spot.

  1. OH my does the din din look delish!!!!!!!! The desert rose looks pretty….it must not want to give in yet. I have pansies still outdoors blooming!!!!! It’s crazy…as we’ve had evening already in the high 20’s. How they make it amazes me…but then we get a warm spell again. I have pictures coming shortly….

    1. Mistress Borghese:
This year has been amazing for the desert roses. I wonder if they’ll ever go dormant. Looking forward to your photos.

  2. Since I am new here, your desert roses are a new and lovely joy to see.
Your shrimp and avocado salad looks very good. We had a shrimp salad last night with avocados and corn in it too! And a lot of other stuff. Still- how funny.

Fun to think of us enjoying the same meal all these miles apart. The desert roses started blooming March 3rd. I’ve never had such a successful year with them.

  3. Boud here: I do like the chocolate drawing on the dessert. But then I like pictures of food. I’d have picked your choice. And yes, big parties turn a restaurant into a madhouse, but you seem to have navigated it fine.
    Oh yes, the flower again..

    1. Boud:
LOL. I had to look back at the photo to see what chocolate on what dessert! I don’t know what that is — maybe oil and vinager — but definitely not chocolate.

  4. On the contrary, now that they’re finally blooming, I’m intrigued to see that they bloom so consistently! That oxtail looks great. Shrimp and avocado sound good but I’m not sure about that presentation. (Don’t tell the boys at Meson Salvador. Not that they would care.)

    1. Steve:
The salad used to be arranged differently. I kind of like it this way. I have a feeling you would have liked its previous iteration. I’ll find an old photo. The desert roses are supposed to have a dormant period. I guess they’re happy where they are.

    1. Kirk:
It’s often interchangeable with ox tail. It’s a bit strong for me, but I do love it ground for burgers.

  5. I would like to take SG’s fries and top them with your avocado slices. Yum! As for that chocolate on your plate… it makes sense to me since I’ve made chocolate avocado mousse before. It works well together.

    1. Kelly:
That’s not chocolate although I wish I could tell you for certain what it is. I THINK oil and vinegar. I’m sure SG would love to top the fries with avocado slices… and then dunk them in his Coke.

  6. Any flowers in the winter are welcome in my world! It’s nice to see Meson Salvador in all its glory and I bet Adrian & the other staff are glad to be busy again. I still carry masks in my handbag in case I feel uncomfortable in stores — the pandemic casts a long shadow sometimes!

    1. Tundra Bunny:
Meson Salvador has been quiet and insanely busy even since summer. I’m sure the busy makes the shift go faster, but they’re run ragged. I couldn’t do it! I always have a mask in my bag, too. There’s always something blooming here. It makes me happy.

  7. Your desert rose photos are always wonderful to see. Yes to your shrimp and avocado but no to the corn and grated carrot. San Geraldo’s plate looks good too. Michelle in Wellington, New Zealand (an occasional commenter & an always reader) XX

    1. Michelle Cooper in Wellington, New Zealand:
I loved everything on that plate. It makes me happy when you check in. So good to know you’re always reading. Thanks!

  8. Oh, I love all of the photos!
And, I think I’ll have your shrimp and avocado dish, with San Geraldo’s fries… yummm!

    1. Judy C:
That was one hefty serving of fries, wasn’t it. The dish is supposed to have vegetables, too. He declined, so they doubled the fries.
