Babette Schwartz, Purificación García

In case you haven’t noticed, I like to shop. I especially like to shop for clothes. Although I’m mostly very casual living here on the beach, I do like to dress things up a bit sometimes, even if it’s just the shirt (and the shoes, and the sunglasses, and the pants or shorts; oh, and the underwear and socks). I used to waste a lot of money on clothes. Now, I enjoy the outlet mall and good retail deals. But I’m still a sucker for some of the designer brands.

I rode the train Monday to Plaza Mayor and the McArthurGlen Outlet Mall. A four-hour outing. Such excitement. The train there (a 27-minute ride) had available seats the entire time. The train back was crowded, although not awful, and I got a seat halfway home. The shopping centre itself was fairly quiet thanks to the heat.

I found only two polo shirts for The Kid Brother. I’m going to see what I can find online. I didn’t buy anything for myself, except some CeraVe skincare products, but I did see lots of clothes of interest. I decided I need to go through my closet and drawers and cull before I add more. I had a light sandwich and a lemon-lime drink that was surprisingly refreshing. I topped it off with a chocolate chip cookie — which was a better choice than the mound of chocolate and sauce and I don’t know what else that tempted me.

It was exciting to be out and about on my own, but the heat and sun took it all out of me and I spent a couple of hours in bed before dinner. Today is pretty much the same as yesterday — slightly less hot than it’s been but still hot and humid. I think it will be a day for mostly indoor activities.

Por si no lo has notado, me gusta ir de compras. Me gusta especialmente comprar ropa.

• Ermenegildo Zegna. Another brand I’ll bypass. Jacket, which I like, reduced from €2,450 to 1,785. Sweater from €590 down to 380. jeans, from €495 to 320. And sneakers from €950 to 615. Oh, please!

• Ermenegildo Zegna. Otra marca a la que prescindo. La chaqueta, que me gusta, rebajada de 2.450€ a 1.785. El jersey, de 590 € a 380. Los vaqueros, de 495€ a 320. Y las zapatillas, de 950€ a 615. ¡Ay, por favor!

• Jacket down from €2,950 to 1,915. Hoodie from €1950 down to 1655. Not even when I was a big spender!

Chaqueta de 2.950€ a 1.915. Sudadera con capucha de 1.950€ a 1.655 . ¡Ni siquiera cuando gastaba mucho!

  1. CeraVe makes great skin care products. I use it daily.

Nice jacket but whew! The price! I’m guessing you don’t have much need for jackets at the beach anyway, though.

    1. J Barlow:
The temps get low enough in winter for jackets and I have quite a few. I might have bought this one — for €1,700 less. Normal temps here in winter can be in the low 50s (sometimes, but rarely, lower). SG wears his hooded winter coat, gloves, and a hat.

    1. David:
Those prices seem a bit extreme to me. Clearly I can’t afford them. (And I’m glad.)

  2. Those are some pricey threads. I guess mainly window shopping on this occasion. Are you dressing like a Spaniard these days?

    1. Figgy Demerera-Boud:
Interesting question. I at time I think dress like a Spaniard. However, a very popular look here is Preppy, and that I’ve never done.

  3. I like the walkabout and the window shopping, but I’ll pass on the clothes.
Glad you got out, even in the heat. I imagine it felt good.

    1. Bob:
It did feel great to take the train and be out for several hours. But I paid for it Tuesday. I won’t push it like that again until the heat drops.

    1. Debra:
Plaza Mayor has a stunning green space in the center (with bird boxes, butterfly houses, bat boxes). I usually enjoy wondering around there, but it was way too hot, so I stuck to the shopping, jumping inside for some AC (although that constant shock was a bit much to take). I do love wandering there.

  4. “Oh please!” is right!
Such fun to get to see you in the last picture 🙂 It’s great that you have train options to get you places.
Heat … and especially humidity!… wears everyone out, Mitch.

    1. Judy C:
The day really knocked me out and Tuesday was spent lounging. The train here is a gift!

  5. I used to love a good outlet mall, back when I had a body that clothes looked good on. My friend Lis and I would shop them. I still fondly remember certain things I bought and loved wearing.
    Nowadays? Nope.
That was a lot of activity in the heat, Mister! I don’t know about you but I’d have to rest for a day or two at least after that.
    Moonsigh…

    1. Ms. Moonsigh:
I love shopping at Plaza Mayor and the outlet mall, too, but the outlet mall isn’t filled with the deals I would find at the US Premium Outlet Malls. This is so high end that the discount prices are still obscene. Still, great athletic wear shops… and Lindt chocolate. And the day killed me. I spent most of yesterday lolling about or asleep.

    1. Shirley:
I liked the first outfit, although I avoid white jeans (and I don’t know why; I like the look).

  6. I love shopping, too – but mainly at charity shops, TK Maxx, or at our beloved budget chain Primark (or “Primani” as it’s commonly known)! Nothing in this world would tempt me in to a shop selling clothing the colour of rusty metal for those stupid prices! Jx

PS Must take a trip to Plaza Mayor one day…

    1. Jon:
I never find anything for myself at charity shops. It annoys me because I have friends who always find great stuff. I’ve bought t-shirts at Primark that are of surprisingly good, enduring quality. We had T“J” Maxx in the States. I used to find great things there, although the Santa Barbara shop always looked like there’d been an explosion, so I stopped going there.

    1. Jim:
I, too, love train rides and we’ve got great, convenient options. I came upon CeraVe when doing research on good skincare products for Diabetics. I think I have the entire line now!

    1. Urspo:
For me, it’s the opposite. I’ll remember that day as the day I did NOT buy any clothes.

  7. I do like the name Purificacion Garcia. But I’m perplexed that there’s something in Spain called the McArthurGlen Outlet Mall. Doesn’t sound very Spanish.

Who buys these insanely priced garments? Are they all for show?

I still can’t access your blog from work — the school’s web filter blocks it for some reason. Hence my late commenting. Sorry!

    1. Steve:
Purificación García does sound like a drag name to me. McArthurGlen is home-based in London and has 24 outlet malls in 8 countries. Not a great name for a Spanish mall. I know people who would pay those prices because “it’s such a great deal”! Crazy. I wonder what your work has against my blog.

      1. McArthurGlen may well have a head office in London, but none of its shopping centres are anywhere near here – Cheshire, Wales, Kent, Swindon, the Midlands, York and all across Europe – and I never heard of them before. Jx

        1. Jon:
There’s now one in “North America” but that’s in Vancouver, British Columbia. So I’m sure most North Americans have never heard of them either.

  8. I would love to dress better and, if i had more disposable income, I would try. It bums me out how bland and boring men’s clothes are around here. Macy’s used to have “rack sails” once or twice a year, filed with fantastic styles that they would try to bring in from NYC but were never able to sell. I LOVED those and used to get some of the most colorful stylish clothes and shoes. I guess they got tired of trying to sell it and gave up. I’m not thrilled with ordering clothes on line…I prefer to see and touch and try on clothes before purchasing. Sigh…If only I could sew…

    1. Sassybear:
I have never ordered clothes online. I could for a brand whose fit and style I already know. I love sales, and outlet malls.
