Empanadatamadas

San Geraldo brought home delicious, meat-filled, empanadas for lunch yesterday. He knows I love empanadas. An entire meal in one container is perfect for me. He saw some beautiful tomatoes while he was shopping and picked up a couple. They were an excellent accompaniment. An unbelievably good, and cheap, lunch.

The first time I typed tomatoes, after typing empanadas, the word came off my fingers as tamadas. I liked it, so that’s where the title came from. You say ta-may-dah; I say tamada.

The letdown after Sarah and Evan’s departure made us feel like we needed to go out for dinner last night. We headed over to Goiko Grill for burgers. So Spanish… I often have the Kevin Bacon (click here), but had something different last night. They’ve added a special chicken burger and SG tried it. I wouldn’t because it’s called the Chick Norris and I loathe Chuck Norris. SG does too, but he thought the sandwich sounded good. He also thought he was getting stacked chicken patties. He missed the description. American cheese and chicken tenders!

I have given up on trying to get the cats on the terrace chairs. If they don’t want to have a better view of the goings-on in the neighborhood or enjoy the sun in the afternoon, it’s their loss. Ungrateful kids! Please enjoy the 1-minute video of Moose with his gentle version of my restless leg syndrome.

Fuimos a Goiko Grill a comer hamburguesas.

• A Chick Norris isn’t cooked, it’s forged in fire. This chicken is a legend. (I hope it pisses him off that his burger is a “chick.”)
• I love the Spanglish. “Today I don’t share, Sorry”
• Me encanta el spanglish.
• A recent lunch at La Popina which included fried eggplant in cane sugar honey. Martin, the owner, makes the best we’ve ever had. SG’s second favorite part is using bread to sop up the remaining honey. And Martin is even more generous with the honey for that reason.

  1. It’s like Moose’s back half is trying to make sure the front half doesn’t fall asleep. Or vice versa?
Who decided that Chuck Norris was worthy of a sandwich name?
That tomato looks better than any we’ve grown so far.
I remember my grandmother’s sister came to visit once when I was little. She said “tomahto” which I had never heard before. I thought it was terribly sophisticated.

    1. Ms. Moon:
I love that description of what Moose is doing! If an American restaurant named a sandwich after Norris, I’d probably never go there again. I come from a family of tomatoes, but I had friends who were tomahtoes.

  2. What a joy to get to watch real life action Moose! And be reminded that real, tasty tomatoes may possibly be found in the next few months, around here 🙂

    1. Judy C:
Having grown up on farm-fresh tomatoes, SG is very picky. These were excellent.

  3. Around here people eat Natchitoches meat pies. They’re a little spicy for me (or were when I still ate meat) Can you pronounce Natchitoches correctly? 😉

I enjoyed taking a minute to watch Moose.

    1. Kelly:
I couldn’t pronounce tomato, but Natchitoches is a snap. I’d never heard of these pies!

    1. Jon:
If I were alone for a week, I’d probably have empanadas every day… or pasties!

  4. That’s like my favorite pasty! I’d like that too. I love to pick my lunch up like that.
I think kitty is dreaming about swan Lake, the Dance of the Little Kitties. Boud.

    1. Boud:
Yes, if I lived where they served pasties (Fuengirola had plenty of shops), I’d eat them all the time.

  5. Oh, Moose, you’re such a card! Half awake, half asleep… it’s like watching someone nodding off!

I wonder what cats dream about?

    1. Tundra Bunny:
We also wonder what cats dream about. Moose talks in his sleep regularly.

    1. Anyhow, it went something like this.

We love empanadas – especially Madam Arcati who, because they resemble mini versions of the native Devon-Cornwall delicacy from his home city Plymouth, calls them “Spanish pasties”! Jx

PS I’m aware that the currently popular pasty-shaped empanada actually originates in South America – and that the original Spanish version is a bit different, and more of a pie…

The first comment was in the Spam folder. That often happens when there are links included in the comment.

        1. Jon:
Wordpress simply saw two links and all that, and popped it into spam.

  6. I keep telling Carlos I want to make empanadas cuz I love them but haven’t done so yet! I need to get oin that; I have the masa flour so what’s stopping me??

I like Moose’s leg exercises … I may try them tonight while I sleep!

    1. Bob:
I love buying empanadas. I already do Moose’s leg exercises in my sleep (or at least I used to).

  7. Epaminondas (/ɪˌpæmɪˈnɒndəs/; Ancient Greek: Ἐπαμεινώνδας; 419/411–362 BC) was a Greek general and statesman of the 4th century BC who transformed the Ancient Greek city-state of Thebes, leading it out of Spartan subjugation into a pre-eminent position in Greek politics called the Theban Hegemony.

    1. wickedhamster:
And to think that’s what I had for lunch! Meat-filled Epaminondas!

  8. We’re seeing empanadas here in Girona. I thought they were only a Latin American dish! The more you know… Olivia

      1. Haven’t found Ines yet, but had a good laugh when I saw the sign for the Chick Norris at a Goiko Grill today. Olivia
