The other night, as I was falling asleep, I began to think about the time in 1999 when I was at Gold’s Gym in Palm Springs, trying to look cool and sexy among all the obviously self-confident and stunning gay men (who were not all self-confident nor stunning), and tripped up the stairs alongside a gaggle of cliquish poseurs.
Then I thought about the time I was drunk-sleeping in the back of a friend’s car in 1974 while my friends continued partying at the disco, when I suddenly felt ill, and threw up out the window. The next day my friend complained that some asshole threw up on the side of his car. “What a jerk,” said I.
The only way to get out of that loop was to start singing in my head all of the lyrics to “Move On” from Sunday in the Park with George before segueing into “Another Day” from Rent. So, it was serendipitous that today’s song appeared on my feed.

The stone paths are incredible………imagining their construction.
Waiting patiently for the fish to arrive.
Jim,
Maybe another two or more weeks for fish. Still adjusting water chemistry. The stone paths amaze me. I’ve watched artisans restore and repair them, on their hands nd news, one stone at a time.
Chase away those old reels, fill your mind with the wonders around you. Those look like modern (as in created in the last 500 years) pavements in the style of Roman pavements. Those look like shell and stone, the Romans would likely have used all stone.
David,
These outdoor pavements originated with the Moors and have been here ever since. No shells. All stones.
For me, I always have a song, hell, sometimes an entire songbook, on a loop in my head!
Bob,
Same for me. All it takes is one word to get me going.
I tend to have dialogues rather than songs in my head. It’s busy in there. I think I’d be falling continuously, checking those intricate sidewalks.they’re too nice to walk on. Boud
Boys,
I’m much more aware of my steps than I used to be. Walking here can be perilous if you don’t watch. I learned that in our first years in Seville. I have songs AND dialogues constantly going in my head. I’ve always wished for an on/off switch.
Your barf story made me laugh out loud — “What a jerk!” — nice save! And wow, the aquarium looks GREAT! SG did a fab job on landscaping it — the fish are gonna LOVE it!
Debra,
SG continues to improve on the aquascape. I do love it. I’m glad I told my barf story. It now finally makes me laugh, too.
Mice to meet you, Mitchell. The aquarium looks great. It will look amazing with those things that swim around.
Love,
Janie
janiejunebug,
Mice to neet you, too. SH is still adjusting chemistry. Things that swim could arrive as early as 2 weeks from now. What a job this has been.
Are we twins separated at birth? Oh…those moments. That SONG! Yes! Wouldn’t it be lovely if we could just go down a check-list of memories and cross certain ones out?
Ain’t gonna happen. We are doomed and destined to go over and over them. For the rest of our lives.
On the other hand, SG’s aquarium is a work of art! Enchanting!
And the stone mosaic paths- well. Gorgeous.
Mary Moon,
I have the same question every time I read one of your posts. But you’re so much more poetic and philosophical than I am.
I’m still finding new-to-me streets with such astounding details.
The barf story had me laughing out loud as well. Your friend should be happy the mysterious asshat had the decency to do it outside, rather than inside the car.
Shirley,
Yes, that former friend should have been grateful (except he always worried about the finish on his car).
Oh. Oh. That. Was. FABULOUS! It feels so good to smile and chuckle and let out some big laughs. 🙂
Judy,
I love these two and their hilarious insights (and delivery).
Watched the “Will and Grace” (2018 version) episode the other night where Jack and Karen can’t get the “Trucks for Tykes” jingle out of their heads. Sometimes when I get up in the night to go to the bathroom I have the theme song from “The Golden Girls” going through my head. Mainly because I usually watch an episode before bed. I find it strangely soothing for some reason.
TexasTrailerParkTrash,
I’m fascinated by what songs play in my head without prompting. Other times,
Ike when I’m obsessing about something, I Hoose songs I know will get me out of that unhealthy loop.
The fish tank looks really good. SG is an artist.
Funny how our mind will trigger old memories but I have difficulty remembering what happened yesterday.
Larry,
Yesterday? How about 4 minutes ago? SG has a very good eye.
I was going to ask “don’t most folks our age have a story like your first?”, but maybe not. Mine wasn’t a drunk/sleep in the back of the car. Mine was a full on blackout and my friends just stashed me there (locked in) so they could continue partying. Sometimes I wonder how I survived my early years.
Kelly,
I am often amazed I survived my 20s.
This was very funny, Scoot. My memory lane is getting shorter and has a lot of potholes!
This is probably a good thing and why I need weekly pill boxes.
SG’s aquarium is looking very warm and inviting. Any fish should feel proud to live there, I know I would.
Deedles,
I’ve always had a hard time remembering what I was doing when I walked into a room, but can repeat verbatim an argument I had 50 years ago.
Love the photo set today, especially the first close-up of the fountain (which as I scrolled went from “is that frog?” to “is it a post-box?” until I saw the spout.
Like everyone else here, I can’t wait for the fish to arrive in that tank! Jx
Jon,
I love that play and fountain every time I’m there. Fish maybe in 2 weeks!
The aquarium is looking good….have the fish been chosen yet? I started with a tropical tank 40 years ago, but it became a cold water ” goldfish” environment after a few years…….much easier!
Frances.
Frances,
SG, since he has the time, is still considering which fish. He does have it narrowed down.
