I never did share photos from my day at Trader Joe’s with The Kid Brother in January. The lines wound their way through every aisle until we reached the few dozen cashiers. I’ve never seen it that crowded. The staff do a phenomenal job managing the crowds and the stock, and KB knows how to work that market.
I saw KB on video last night. He was in a great mood and it was an easy conversation. I showed him the terrace windows and the new furniture and he approved. I still stress before our conversations since I never quite now what I’ll be hit with. It’s nice when it goes smoothly. He’s already asking for dates for my next visit. I’m delaying just a bit. I have more than 7 months after all and we’ve got other things to plan (and pay for) in the meantime.
Speaking of paying for things. My credit card and mobile Wallet did in fact work yesterday. So the new windows are paid off. Plus I’m the proud owner of two new linen shirts, one tan and one white. I tried on a couple of pairs of linen pants. One fit beautifully, except they were too short. The other pair were “loose fit” and might have been fine had it not been for the baggy ass. Not mine, the pants.
I’ll model the shirts for you and I’ll share photos of the terrace. I’m just a little slow or tired, or both. The dizzies are back, but I saw my public health doctor this morning and I have a pill for vertigo. Public Health sure is convenient. I left the house at 8:58 this morning for a 9:02 appointment. I was home at 9:15. We’ll see how the new pill goes. What’s one more pill (or three since it’s three times a day).
Merchi is here, so San Geraldo and I just returned from coffee at La Popina. San Geraldo had second breakfast and I had a magdalena (madeleine). Although you can find them here in the traditional shell shape, they’re more commonly found as muffins.
Dudo just came into my office seemingly demanding his treat. It turns out San Geraldo had already served them both. With Merchi here, he placed the treat plates in his office so the cats wouldn’t get spooked by all her activity. Dudo wouldn’t eat there because that’s not where the treats belong. I put his plate in the kitchen and he happily cleaned it up. Merchi laughed. San Geraldo said, “Asshole.”
San Geraldo dijo: «Gilipollas».

Great building for a Trader Joe’s, I enjoy shopping there. I need an excuse to go to New York, let me know when you are coming this way. I hope the new pills stop your world from spinning.
David:
Trader Joe’s has been in that building since 2008 and KB has been shopping there all that time. The bank was built in 1871. So far, no dizzies this morning!
I have always wanted to live in NYC but honestly I would not be able to handle those crowds for everyday stuff like grocery shopping. I accept standing in lines for performances, etc., but for daily activities it would annoy me! But oh what a beautiful space for grocery shopping…
Nina
I just never learned the method to the madness at Trader Joe’s. Always found it difficult to shop and check out (no conveyor belt!). My go to stores are more conventional. I wish we had Aldi in New Mexico.
Funny enough, Aldi owns Trader Joe’s… [I have no experience of the latter, but the former is now one of the UK’s biggest supermarkets.] Jx
Aldi Nord owns them
Aldi Sud which owns the American ones do not

Jon:
I always loved shopping at Trader Joe’s. There’s an Aldi about a 15-minute walk from us. Do you like the place?
Great photo of your brother at Trader Joe’s! And Dudo, you demanding little rascal! Glad your cards worked yesterday.
That doesn’t look like any Trader Joe’s I’ve been to! (which in reality is only one 🙄) I like Whole Foods better, but they’re both fancier than my usual places.
Kelly:
I always loved shopping at Trader Joe’s. Ours never looked liked that either, and I’ve been to several. Prices at Trader Joe’s are a lot different from Whole Foods.
I see Trader Joes does it differently than most supermarkets I’ve been to (assuming it IS a supermarket), where each register has its own individual line. And sometimes even THAT involves a lot of waiting.
Kirk:
Their system is exceptionally efficient and keep the line moving rapidly. I find the one-line system very inefficient.
That’s a glamorous Trader Joe’s. I was expecting a regular grocery store type of environment.
I hope the dizzies fade with the new pills, gah. Boud
Boud:
It’s a very elegant building and well thought out by Trader Joe’s. Even with that mob, the line moved quickly. I love their dark chocolate–covered edamame.
Love me some Trader Joe’s.
They’re not the best with unions, but I LOOOOOVEE some of their products and cannot find them anywhere else. Their salads have saved me more than once when having people over.
And that’s a very stylish store!
XOXO
Sixpence Notthewiser:
I just read about Trader Joe’s and unions. Very disappointing. I used to shop there regularly when we lived in California.
What was that very grand building that now houses what appears to be some kind of North African bazaar? [Does it sell goats? It looks like it should.] Jx
Jon:
It began as The South Brooklyn Savings Institution in 1871. The goats are sold in the low extension you see at left.
We have a Trader Joes here but on the busiest most annoying traffic street in the city
So we almost never go

Adam:
That would be awful and I wouldn’t go either. KB and I walk to this Trader Joes’s, less than 10 minutes from my hotel and the subway. Not a place to drive to.
That Dudo is one spoiled feline, LOL. I’ve seen the Trader Joe’s I sometimes shop at on busy days, which is most of the time, but the lines in your photos are insane.
Shirley:
I’ve never seen anything like that mob. A staffer held a flag on a staff that could be seen throughout the store so you’d know where the line began. Insane, but well managed and relatively quick.
That is what I would call a fancy shmancy Trader Joe’s. The one we have in this area is on the far side of Tallahassee from me so I almost never go there. If I take the interstate it’s really not that far but I hate taking the interstate so there you go.
I really hope those pills help.
Ms. Moon
Ms. Moon:
I love the building and the fact they didn’t strip the interior. Very cool space and so well managed.
Trader Joe’s looks interesting……always busy?
Miss having a cat around…..been a while and ‘no pets allowed’ policy in our new abode.
Jim:
Popular, but I’ve never seen it as busy as that. I was impressed by how patient Chuck was.
I always love seeing and hearing about Chuck!
We don’t have a Trader Joes here, alas. But we’re finally getting a Publix and I’m super excited about it!
Jennifer
Jennifer:
I’ve never been to a Publix. We didn’t have any on the west coast and I had never even heard of it until reading blogs.
I adore the punim in that top photo!!!
Secondly, what great building to house Trader Joe’s. I have been shopping them for years in San Francisco, Sacramento, Miami, and now here in Columbia; there is always something good.
And Dudo knows where treats are served and that is not to be changed!!!!
Bob:
Dudo has truly grown into himself. What a diva! I used to love shopping Trader Joe’s everywhere we lived in California. I miss a lot of their products, but especially dark chocolate–covered edamame.
There was a massive solar flare the other day that affected communications and satellites, so that’s likely what caused your cards to not work. The sun is coming to the end of it’s 11 year active cycle, so there will be fewer northern lights to see and fewer flares to deal with.
Dudo is the definition of persnickety — and I’d have agreed with SG’s assessment, LOL!
What a beautiful, historic building for a grocery store! Love the huge windows and ceiling. I imagine Trader Joe’s prices are very high to pay for the location, but I can see why your brother loves shopping there!
Tundra Bunny:
Nothing to do with the solar flare. Our bank is simply trigger happy when it comes to suspecting card use as fraud. The bank blocked the card because it considered my paying that final bill fraudulent activity. The day I did pay, however, the shop had been having connectivity problems in the morning (due to the solar flare). Thankfully, it had resolved itself by the time I arrive. Trader Joe’s prices are very competitive and often cheap! I used to buy my protein bars there because they were hugely discounted. Some great stuff, too, that I never found anywhere else.
Wow! That is one beautiful TJ’s. And large too. I’ve found the lines usually move really well, except for the after work shopping lines. Hope the dizzies will be contained. Olivia
Olivia:
This Trader Joe’s has perfected managing the crowds. The low building attached at left in the photo is also part of the store. Clogged ear at the moment. Hope it passes!
I just commented on your latest post, and as I was scrolling through my “reader”, I noticed another post! We have two Trader Joe’s near us and I shop there once in a while. It’s great to find unusual things. Wegmans is still my store of choice though. We also have a Publix down the road too. I guess I am in grocery heaven. I hope the new medication does the trick!
Michael:
I’ve never been to a Wegman’s but it’s where I shop online for my brother. We, too, have great choices all around us. So far today, not dizzy!
Fingers crossed for no more dizzies!
