The Cave / La Cueva

Saturday night after Elena, Tynan, and I strolled the fair, we met San Geraldo at La Cueva, a very good restaurant 9 minutes from home. On our walk to meet SG, I stopped to take a photo of a wall of flowers and Tynan stopped at the same time to tie his shoe. I took the picture anyway and like how his presence gives a better idea of the scale.

The restaurant, La Cueva, has a great location on Avenida de Gran Capitan, excellent menu and food, and sometimes friendly but mostly inattentive staff. They get along well with each other and seem to prefer hanging out together rather than paying attention to customers. At least they’re pleasant, usually, if they do come to the table. But, like I said, excellent menu and food. You can see what we had below.

San Geraldo walked to El Corte Inglés with his shopping cart this morning to do a small grocery shop. We recently received our large order from Mercadona, but there are some products only available at El Corte Inglés. It’s just across the street from La Cueva, a 10-minute walk. Less than 25 minutes later, the buzzer rang and when I looked at the screen, I saw San Geraldo’s pissed-off face. He didn’t have his keys, which meant he probably didn’t have his bag with his wallet and his phone. I buzzed him in and then went to open the apartment door. And that’s when I saw his bag sitting on the chair in the entry. He cooled off for about a half hour and went back out.

At least the temperature was only 23˚C/73.4˚F when he was out the first time. It’s continuing to climb, 26C/78.8F currently, and will get up to around 31C/87.8F today. A nice drop from the heat we had last week and over the weekend. Our intercom and video screen are located off the kitchen, at the edge of the dining room. It’s a long apartment and the kitchen is far from the front door. My office is off the entry. So, when the intercom calls, I have a little trot to see who’s there and let them in. Often, they’ll ring a second time. Too bad I can’t link it to my mobile. I always (usually) have that with me wherever I am.

We plan to go tomorrow morning, finally, to the city office to pick up our registration documents. Once we have whatever it is they’ll give us, we hope to go down the list and easily change anything else we need to update with our new address. It’s only been 6 months.

It’s now time to take the laundry up to the roof. Yesterday, it took me about 10 minutes to hang the laundry. By the time I finished, my lightweight long-sleeved shirt was dry.

Lástima no poder vincularlo a mi teléfono.

• Kumato tomatoes from the Costa Tropical (a stretch of coastline east of Málaga City) with avocado and tuna belly.
• Burrata Salad. Arugula, tomato, and burrata with basil pesto and balsamic reduction.
• Ensalada De Burrata.
• Fried pork belly from Soria (marinated in salt and paprika). Soria is a city about 6 hours north (by car) in the autonomous community of Castille and Leon. We live in the autonomous community of Andalusia.
• Torreznos de Soria.
• Flamenquín of loin, ham, and cheese with fries and aioli sauce. Flamenquín originated in Córdoba. The traditional form is without cheese. Tynan and I both prefer it with cheese, which is how it’s served just about everywhere else.
• Mixed platter of Iberian cold cuts and cheeses.
• Tabla mixta de embutidos ibéricos y quesos.
• The hunk behind the bar working on my meat.
• Three-chocolate cake.
• While we waited to order dessert, the waiter was otherwise occupied.

Touch Tynan to make him bigger. He won’t mind.
Toca a Tynan para hacerlo más grande. No le importará.

  1. Si typical to get to the shop then realize you don’t have, well, anything. I’ve been known to go to the dumpster without the garbage, doh. What did I think I was doing, picking up more garbage, who knows. Boud

    1. Boud:
I remember when I was in my teens and 20s, going downstairs with the trash which went to a collection room in the back of the building. But I would find myself walking to the subway or to the car still holding the bag of trash.

  2. That Burrata salad looks dee-lish; one of my favorite salads when I want to eat healthy-ish. But then fried pork belly entered the picture and all healthiness left the building.

The meat handler is quite dee-lish as well.

    1. Bob:
The meat handler was even hunkier and sexier in person. The fried pork belly didn’t do it for me. Tynan loved it.

    1. Debra:
This place is always worth a return visit despite the foggy staff.

    1. Jim:
I’ve done it, too. SO aggravating. The tomato dishes were delicious!

  3. The tomatoes with avocado and tuna and the burrata salad look like exactly what I am craving these days. Am I becoming a Spaniard?
Nice of the guy behind the bar to take such care with your meat.
And who needs to tend to customers when there are glassware sculptures to be made?

    1. Ms. Moon:
Everything was so good (although the fried pork belly didn’t appeal. Tynan and SG loved it.) And, see? You need to move here… with the entire family.

    1. I remember my parents hanging clothes when I was very young. Can’t imagine doing that these days. Our hoa probably wouldn’t allow it

      1. Adam:
My mother hung clothes on the line when I was very young, too. When we arrived here and learned that that’s how most people do it (dryers are rare), I thought I’d never survive the change. I adjusted easily and now I prefer it. And, you’re right, I’ll bet many if not most HOAs wouldn’t allow it.

    2. David:
The tomato dishes were beyond perfect. That recipe for Flamenquines Cordobeses is not pure Cordobes. Flamenquín from Córdoba, where it originated, is famous for not including cheese. Tynan and I both prefer it with cheese, and the most common cheese used is manchego.

  4. Food porn again! I want all of it – and the waiter – but especially the Soria pork scratchings… Jx

PS Maybe while you were waiting, he’d sneaked off to handle his own meat?

    1. Jon:
Next time I’ll get a better photo of the hunky guy who works the meat. He worked it well.

  5. You were right to include Tynan for scale against that huge wall of flowering vines!

Poor SG — we’ve all had days like that.

Have you watched the series “Eva Longoria: Searching For Spain”? Last night’s episode was about Gallicia. She’s visiting all 14 regions of Spain to sample their cuisine. Despite very small servings, I’m surprised that Spaniards aren’t all overweight!

    1. Tundra Bunny:
Yes, lucky thing Tynan got in my way. I recently had a day like SG’s. I’ve been told about Longoria’s series but haven’t watched any of it. Found out about it right after she was in Córdoba and we almost crossed paths. I love her!

  6. I think you’re feeling your oats today. 😉 When you said SG cooled off before going back out, I first thought you meant his irritation in forgetting the bag. I like the red shoes!

    1. Kelly:
My adolescent mind was feeling its oats, yes. I WAS talking about SG’s irritation. He needed to reset. Tynan always has great sneakers.

    1. Steve:
And the picture doesn’t do him justice. Muscles from working the meat all the team.

  7. I loved the comment about the hunk behind the bar working on your meat. Poor SG. That sure must have been frustrating.

    1. Michael:
Yeah, working my meat, I was in that kind of mood when I wrote. Poor SG. He recovered after a half hour, went back out, and succeeded.

    1. Sixpence Notthewiser:
That’s exactly how long it took SG to stop stewing. A half hour he was laughing about and went back out.

    1. Judy C:
The chocolate pie was excellent. Since Jerry makes the best chocolate cake in the world, in my opinion, I rarely take a chance on a restaurant chocolate cake or pie. This was worth it. Hope you’re recovering well!

  8. Food looks good. Too bad about the inattentive staff. Maybe if it was buffet, it’d be an even better dining experience.

    1. Kirk:
Ooh, no. I’m not a fan of buffet. It’s a combination of being a prince and wanting someone to wait on me, and obsessing about other people doing things to the food as they serve themselves. I once watched a child walk around a buffet, help himself to tastes using his hands, and then put much of what he tried back in the trays. I told the manager. The trays were taken into the kitchen. “New” trays came out too quickly. I was sure they simply straightened them a bit and brought the same trays out.

  9. I feel for Geraldo, I once drove ( only 10 minutes) to the supermarket in town , and was just walking into the store, when I realised I had picked up the ” dog handbag” …….poo bags ,dog treats and not much else…..and not my bag with money and cards!! Haven’t done that again….yet!
I like the look of that ham and cheese sausagey thing. What is the ” coating”?
    Frances

    1. Frances:
I think flamenquin is traditionally rolled in flour, beaten, eggs, and bread crumbs. I’ve been out a couple of times without my wallet or bag. So frustrating. SG recovered well.
