An unmade bed and a tomato / Una cama deshecha y un tomate

La versión en español está después de la versión en inglés.

Dudo and Moose are such sensitive souls (or so they’d have us believe) that we hate to disturb them no matter what they’re doing. If they’re asleep on the unmade bed, I will not make them move and the bed will go unmade for much if not all of the day. It’s a hardship, I know, but it’s a sacrifice I make. Yesterday I even put off a siesta despite how I was feeling. I didn’t want to disturb the cats. Although if I did get into bed, they would have accomodated me, and Dudo would have settled on a pillow next to my head. Ridiculous.

Thanks for all the wonderful birthday and get well wishes! I felt better as the day progressed yesterday. So, just like a few weeks ago, this appears to have been some three-day bug I picked up (or didn’t get rid of). I’m much better today.

We opened all the windows this morning because the temperature was in the mid-20sC/70sF. But it’s now up to 35C/95F and climbing, so the windows are again closed and the AC is on. Interestingly, the fresh air blowing through the house wreaked havoc on San Geraldo’s allergies while I’m fine.

My birthday yesterday turned out to be one to remember despite my not feeling up to par. San Geraldo brought home delicious pulled pork empanadas for lunch, followed by Ines Rosales originals, which he actually called Ines. He saw a tomato at El Corte Inglés he couldn’t resist and we had it as a side with the empanadas. It was enormous (didn’t fit the palm of my hand) and, thankfully, delicious. I say thankfully because it cost €5. He was shocked when the price rang up, but of course that didn’t stop him from buying it. Birthday dinner was, we’re both ashamed to admit, Burger King. It’s on the ground floor of the building next door and it was easy. However, SG included in that two ice creams which we added to the Beacon Hill Brownies he had made in the afternoon. Heaven!

SG turned off the AC while the brownies were cooling so they wouldn’t collapse. But it was over 40C/104F and I was trying to sleep. The bedroom started to heat up and I complained. So it’s my fault the brownies collapsed. I apologized. They taste the same. He’s freezing them in individual servings today so we don’t OD or go into diabetic shock.

I’m going to try and be a bit more active today (it won’t take much trying). I’ve already surpassed yesterday by throwing a load of laundry in the machine.

Me disculpé. Saben igual. Hoy los congela en porciones individuales para que no suframos una sobredosis ni entremos en shock diabético.

Voy a intentar ser un poco más activa hoy (no me costará mucho). Ya superé lo de ayer metiendo una carga de ropa en la lavadora.

    1. David,
Too bad I didn’t hold the tomato in my hand to give you an idea of size.

  1. Burger King?! Say it ain’t so!!! LOL

Seriously, though, BK is good every now and then. Sometimes cheap fast food is just the thing! You certainly eat lots of gourmet meals to balance out the occasional junk. 🙂

    1. Jennifer,
Bk is much too easy. We don’t do it often, but we do do it. We do crispy chicken sandwiches.

  2. Collapsed or not, that brownie looks good! But what caught my eye was the art behind it — the people smoking at what appears to be a lunch counter? Who is that by and any other details you can share?

    1. Debra,
I always thought the best brownies were collapsed. SG tries to avoid that. Either way, his brownies are the best I’ve ever had. Our friend Tynan doesn’t like brownies, but inhales SG’s. A post on the art coming today.

  3. I’m glad you’re feeling better today. And yes, that was a good day. I expect you forced yourself to enjoy the brownies even, shock, horror, collapsed. Usually fruit as big as that tomato is not very flavorful, but it seems to have been very good.
I was amused at the fast food comedown from your usual lofty dining spots! Boud.

    1. Boud,
Oh, yes, the brownies were another hardship. But life is sacrifice. I was stunned by how delicious the tomato was. We are very good at coming down to earth. Our McDonald’s in Connecticut knew us by name and our order. THAT was humbling for me, but I got over it.

  4. Happy belated birthday…I’m not keeping up with blogs as I used to. Getting old and well, getting dressed in the morning takes up a lot of time lately.

    1. Frank,
I always thought brownies were supposed to look like that. SG’s are perfection in my opinion.

  5. You spoil those cats rotten!

    Jx

PS Not so much a tomato as a red pumpkin, really.
PPS I, too, am intrigued with that artwork behind the brownie…

    1. Jon,
Yes, we do, but they tell us it’s required. I’ll post about that artwork today.

  6. That tomato looks yummy. I love a summer, even early summer, tomato.
And I too will not make a bed if a cat is asleep on it. That’s a given in our household too.

    1. Bob,
Our old cat, Dobie, didn’t care if I moved him. He came right back and I would keep moving him until the bed was made. These boys have too much attitude. I never expected the tomato to taste so good.

  7. Wait. Hold on. Brownies are SUPPOSED to look exactly like that! I would not make a recipe that called for any sort of leavening agent. They should be almost like fudge. At least, that’s what I think which is pretty meaningless. So, having said that- SG’s brownies look perfect.
That tomato is giving me great envy. With three of those I could construct an entire tomato pie. Or, alternately, about ten BLT’s.
I’m sorry I go on so much. Mostly just Happy Birthday once more and remember, it’s not just a day- it’s a month!

    1. Ms. Moon,
I agree with you. I always thought that’s what a brownie looked like. Besides, SG makes the unbelievable brownies whether they collapse a little or not. Ooh, a tomato pie. We had a tomato side for two meals. You do NOT go on so much! And, yes, it is a month. SG always used to require that for himself.

  8. I’m the same way about disturbing Olga when she’s lying in bed — I always hate to do it. Dave, on the other hand, just rolls her over. She doesn’t seem to care.

    That is quite a tomato!

I haven’t had Burger King in many years. In fact do we even have them in London…? (A quick Google search confirms there are 31 Burger Kings in London, including one within walking distance of us!)

    1. Steve,
We can roll Moose over when we go to bed. He complains. Dudo gets pissed off and we leave the room. That’s usually temporary. It’s dangerous to have a Burger King right next door. Cheap and easy. However ordering a pizza or a Chinese dinner for delivery is cheaper and we don’t have to leave the house.

  9. I can think of things far worse than Burger King (which I had for lunch today… Impossible Whopper since I’m vegan) and collapsed brownies. Desserts don’t have to look good. What’s important is how they taste and those look delicious. Glad you’re feeling better and had a good day.

  10. Moose and Dudo sure know luxurious thread counts when they see them, LOL! And personally, I’ve never seen the point of making the bed (unless company is expected) ’cause you’re just going to sleep in it again in 12 hours or so!

  11. So happy to hear you are feeling better, it could be the AC that cause this discomfort, too cold inside and too hot outside, a shock to the system. They have Burger Rey in Spain? Are they still charcoal cooked? I tell people I am 39 like Jack Benny, I think I am dating myself.
