Popcorn chilli potpourri / Popurrí

La versión en español está después de la versión en inglés.

Well so much for my plans. This post was supposed to go up Wednesday. I got close but then took a detour and didn’t find my way back until after 9 p.m. So I decided to just wait for today. It started with images from a brain set on random and that’s what you’re getting. I have plenty more to share from New York. Considering I didn’t do much while there, I sure did take a lot of pictures.

I took another long walk the other day, 2-1/2 hours of random roaming around town. Along the way, I came upon Arab baths, now a museum, from the 10th century. I didn’t even know they were there. I need to do more homework on Córdoba. I’ll tell you all about those one day soon. Of course, there are pictures.

I stopped by to visit Shannon and Stacy the other day, our new and already dear friends. They have two dogs I fell in love with, Annie and Libby. The dogs and I were all over each other and, no surprise, the cats were not pleased with me when I got home. They looked for cuddles. But when I reached out my hands, they sniffed, reared back, and gave me the dirtiest looks. I washed my hands, changed my clothes, and was eventually forgiven.

San Geraldo made a variation on chilli the other night. Ground beef, ground pork, a little bit of this, a little bit of that, nothing of some other things because he was all out. It was delicious. He didn’t have any bread or crackers, so he popped a bowl of popcorn. A perfect addition. We had two meals with popcorn and the final one last night with bread. I preferred it with popcorn, so a new tradition has begun.

    1. Debra:
Some residential buildings have surprising lobbies. In the renovation of the fountain, that planting surround was added. A beautiful addition.

  1. Love the fountain and the wall inside the apartment building.
I have had “those” looks from the cats many times, after spending even a few minutes around “other” animals.
There was a restaurant in Miami we frequented that served a ceviche with popcorn so you got the crunch with the smoothness of the fish; it seemed odd but was delicious. Next time we run out of bread for soups or chilis I will be popping the corn!

    1. Bob:
I’ve had those reactions before. They sure can make you feel guilty. I apologized profusely. As for the popcorn, it was perfection. You just can’t add too much at a time. It gets quickly soggy and then disappears.

  2. Happy Thanksgiving. In that first photo, the look on Moose’s face scowls, “You smell like a Dog! How could you?”

  3. Popcorn, how clever, and why not. I think it would be possible to make a coffee table book of Fountains of Cordoba. With the companion Doors of Cordoba. And more in the series. Boud

  4. I suppose that when a cat owner comes home smelling of dog, it’s not unlike when a man comes home smelling of someone else’s perfume. HOW DARE YOU!?
Damn. Laugh-In was such a good show.
Popcorn in chili. Worth a try.

  5. Oh, how amazing it is that you can just come across 10th c baths, just like that… what a place!
San Geraldo’s chili meal looks tasty–what a smart idea, to add popcorn 🙂
Happy Thanksgiving to you two– I hope you know how grateful I am for your friendship and blog posts… they add so much to my life 🙂 So what if we’ve never met in person, right? I often think of the people who had pen pals for decades, and became dear friends that way. Same thing!

    1. Judy C:
I agree about our friendship. SO grateful for it. My sister started writing to a pen pal in Japan when she was 16. She considered her her best friend. Her pen pal married and moved to the midwest with her scientist husband (she was a musician). She and Dale planned to finally meet and then Dale suddenly married and moved to England. They continued writing at least weekly until Dale died at the age of 29.

  6. That is indeed a bizarre idea – chilli with popcorn instead of rice! It doesn’t sound like it would work, but probably worth a try… Jx

      1. Heavens – it’s the only way Chill Con Carne is served over here!

We do have taco/tortilla kits (Old El Paso brand seems to be the main one) in our supermarkets, and there are some Tex-Mex restaurants (even Taco Bell made a comeback recently decades after quitting the UK), but I am not sure exactly who eats the stuff. I have never heard anyone mention “going for a Mexican” – Indian, Chinese, Italian, yes.

        Jx

        1. Jon:
Fascinating about rice with chilli there! We had another round of leftovers, over pasta. I’ve never heard any of my British friends even mention Mexican food. Taco Bell is an abomination.

          1. Another combination that works is chilli on a baked potato.

As for Taco Bell, my sister always said it smelt like cow farts! Not the most appealing of places; I have never set foot in one. A branch opened in Wood Green after the pandemic, and I have not seen a customer in there. They completely failed in the UK in the 1990s, so it beats me why they decided to return. Jx

          2. Jon:
Yes. I’ve seen chilli on baked potatoes! Your sister is exactly right about Taco Bell. I was in one once and that was enough for me.

    1. Walt the Fourth:
Hmmm. Someone should package chilli-flavored popcorn. Oh, someone probably already has. I loved Laugh-In.

  7. JoAnne Worley! Haven’t thought of her in years. Popcorn on chili sounds quite good! I love the tile mural in the apartment lobby.

    1. Steve:
JoAnne Worley brought back memories of “Is that another chicken joke?!?” Some residential buildings have some astounding tile art in their lobbies. That should be another blog post theme.
