Torrijas, pheromones, fallen fronds / Torrijas, feromonas, frondas caidas

La versión en español está después de la versión en inglés.

San Geraldo used that cat pheromone spray (Feliway Classic) a second time and we are now truly convinced it works. Dudo was a bit insane and completely uncooperative. SG sprayed his office (where Dudo had stationed himself) and the cat carrier, and closed the door. Fifteen minutes later, he was able to walk in, lift Dudo off the cat tree, and place him in the travel cage. Not one aggressive move from Dudo. Not one mew. He didn’t make a sound the entire 2-minute walk to the vet’s office. The vet took one look at Dudo and said, “Beautiful!” No more cone. No more treatments. No more paper towels in the litter box. Moose kissed Dudo’s face when we got home. I’ve been kissing both their faces every chance I get. Moose can’t get enough love (as you can see in today’s photos) and Dudo is almost back to his old self; he’s just a tiny bit suspicious. We are all in a much happier place today.

I have a favorite treat during Holy Week — torrijas. No, they are not Spanish French toast! Read about them here. Unsurprisingly, San Geraldo didn’t feel like making any this year, so he picked up some at the supermarket. The only ones left that day had chocolate topping. The chocolate was good. The torrija was good. But I prefer them separately.

We went out for lunch. I’m still dragging my ass. It’s time for a siesta. (I see my doctor Friday morning.)

Salimos a almorzar. Todavía estoy arrastrando el trasero. Es hora de una siesta. (Veo a mi médica el viernes por la mañana).

• Too bad it only works on cats. (It makes us choke.)

• Lástima que sólo funcione en gatos. (Nos hace ahogarnos).

• Seen on the Paseo Monday. Construction workers had been removing the palm trees before work started and transplanting them when done. I don’t know what made them change their minds. But, oops!
• Visto en el Paseo el lunes. Los trabajadores de la construcción habían estado quitando las palmeras antes de que comenzaran los trabajos y trasplantándolas cuando terminaron. No sé qué les hizo cambiar de opinión. Pero ¡ups!

  1. I have never even heard of torrijas. They sound worth making.
Who is most relieved that Dudo can resume normal activities sans cone? You and SG or the cats? It’s been a slog. No wonder you’re still dragging ass.
I wonder if they even sell that cat-calming spray here.

    1. MsMaryMoon:
I encourage you to try the torrijas. Elena’s mother’s recipes are always perfect. I think all 4 of us were traumatized by the cone. So happy to see the last of that. I know Feliway is sold in the States.

  2. I just started using the cat pheromone diffuser as my old kitty Dijon would meow for no apparent reason upstairs by himself. I think it is working as he hasn’t been doing as much of that. Glad to hear it worked for y’all.

    1. Melinda:
I tend to be a skeptic when it comes to these kinds of product claims. But SG and I are both convinced after using it with Dudo twice.

    1. Shirley:
Elena’s mother has some of the most perfect, traditional recipes. Have a ball!

  3. I tried that Feliway pheremone spray on the cat when we were traveling to Belize – an 18hr trip! It might have helped – she at least didn’t yowl the whole time, but she was terrified. I had a nice soft sided carrier that I was able to hold on my lap on the airplane and even unzipped enough to put my arm inside to pet her. I am so glad she survived the trauma and had 3 wonderful years here before she died at the age of 16. Also glad to see Dudo and Moose (and you and SG?) doing better!

    1. Wilma:
Dudo wasn’t happy but he sure was calmer… and that’s all that mattered to us. Our cat Dobie was 14 when we moved to Spain. He had a myriad of health problems and our trip was convoluted — a few longish stops in the Midwest, flying back to LA for a day and then to NYC for a week with my mother before flying here. We were so grateful when our vet offered to take Dudo in as the hospital cat. He lived three more years with exceptional care and no stress.

    1. Mistress Borghese:
Those are both photos of Moose. He was euphoric simply because he was getting love.

  4. There are a few things that have that effect on people, most are controlled substances, there is always gin.

    1. David:
I wish there were a human pheromone spray. Gin works, but too many other complications.

  5. Glad to know things are getting back to normal. Is your appointment Friday just to wrap things up and give you the all clear? Y’all deserve some stress-free relaxation.

    1. Kelly:
The appointment Friday is with my regular doctor after my gastroenteritis-something-or-other — and I feel like complaining. Next Thursday is follow-up with the surgeon.

  6. I must try the not French Toast some day! Jx

PS I wonder if any mad scientist out there is working on a human version of that pheromone spray? It could be useful…

    1. Jon:
I’ve been wondering the same thing about a pheromone spray! I highly recommend the Not French Toast. If you’re ever here around Semana Santa, El Corte Inglés sells an excellent version.

  7. Boud here in praise of pheromones. Great for cats who fight, and I think the first exposure is probably the most effective. Good idea. I love how the cats’ emotional temperature affects the humans.

    1. Boud:
Oh, coming home with Dudo Monday felt like a dark cloud had been lifted.

  8. Well, thank Jeebus for pheromone spray! Dudo does look a little stoned in the first picture, LOL! I’m glad the boys have recovered so now you and SG can de-stress, rest and get ready for some outdoor adventures in your beach neighbourhood. Lucky you!

    1. Tundra Bunny:
Both the photos are of Moose. All he needs is a little cuddle and he looks stoned.

  9. That spray is a great thing to have around!
    Dudo looks a little ‘stoned’.
YAY! Things are getting back to where they should be. Good work!

  10. The City Council must have loads of money to constantly redo sidewalks and whatever. Here if anything is done once in 50 years we are lucky. Love to see tourists in the Summer time trip and go face first on stone sidewalk, not a pretty sight. Happy to see both your cats are doing well, they are quite beautiful.

    1. Laurent:
These are infrastructure improvements being done for drainage and flood control. But the City does take surprisingly good care of things. Not much deferred maintenance here. Always thinking of how it looks for the tourists.

    1. Debra:
We are both believers. The cats are content, although Dudo continues to keep one eye on San Geraldo.
