THE RECIPE CALLED FOR ONE can of lager for a marinade. Beer is not something we ever have in the house. “I need a can of lager for cooking. Do you have lager?” San Geraldo explained to the owner of the little market downstairs. San Geraldo doesn’t drink much and never drinks beer. The owner of the market doesn’t drink at all. “Do you mean wine?” he asked, as he walked over to the shelf containing alcoholic beverages. The blind leading the blind. San Geraldo glanced at the beers and noticed a can clearly marked “lager.” Success! Click here for the recipe.
We had pulled pork that night and then for lunch the next two days. Dinner was SG’s typical balanced meal. Lunch was a bit of a mix. In addition to the beer marinade on the pork, there was a barbecue sauce to go over it all. I loved both, but for lunch I chose the marinaded pork without the barbecue sauce. It had a kind of caramelised flavour and didn’t need anything else.
Last night, SG made another pot of Hungarian goulash. He didn’t decorate the kitchen this time (click here). It was followed by apple cake.
My back seems to be improving, but a lot more slowly than I had hoped. I took one 1-gram Paracetamol Sunday morning, which sent me to bed for almost the entire day. And I surprisingly slept through the night as well. I haven’t taken anything today and I still feel like I could go back to bed. I’m such a lightweight. I doubt I’ll be doing much today, except watching my mood sink.
Dudo, at least, is happy. He was in bed with me the entire time. And, when I wasn’t in bed, he was waiting for me there. However, I woke early this morning to find him curled under SG’s arm. Lucky boy.
I would have posted this a half hour ago but the boys were taking turns whining. I held out until 10:30 and gave them their treats. It makes me feel like I’m winning. While they enjoyed their treats I “cooked” my tea and SG’s instant coffee. He then joined me in the kitchen and cut two slices of apple cake (baked last night). At the moment, I don’t care about my back.

I should pull some pork sometime soon. I have never used beer. I am not much of a beer drinker, but I would be able to find a lager. You can have fun making various bbq sauces.
David:
Thank you for going “there.” I was tempted to make the title a bit more direct, but figured I’d leave it to the comments.
Dudo looks SO comfortable!
Good to hear your back is somewhat better today……take it easy and as I used to tell my fitness classes….’Listen to your body’!!
Have never tried ‘pulled pork’…..SG makes it look so good.
Jim:
And this morning it’s better enough to make me feel like there’s hope! SG makes excellent pulled pork, but this one was the best by far.
HEINIE! I don’t drink beer; spouse keeps miller lite bottles in the fridge. we slow cook pork roasts in lite teriyake sauce, or sesame ginger sauce. spouse was drooling at your pork pix. and dudo was taking care of you.
anne marie:
SG makes great pulled pork, but this version was best by far. I used to drink a lot of beer and always had some in the fridge. Now the only booze in the house is what SG buys for cooking and baking.
Those clever boys know to tag-team you!
Debra:
It DOES feel like they’re tag teaming some mornings. So far I haven’t heard a peep today and there’s only a half hour to go.
shocked you have no cerveza en la casa! Nessecitos comprar a menudo!
Urspo:
I never drink at home and there’s always the little market in an emergency.
A patch of sunlight and nothing else matters. Would that we humans could feel that way.
Raybeard:
I’m imagining being a cat in your house or mine; a good life.
Good work, Jerry! That looks delicious. I have to take a muscle relaxant now and again when I get a muscle spasm in my back. The first time I followed directions and took 2 tablets. They were so effective I almost forgot to breathe. Now I take just 1, and that generally works out fine. I find that a tablet taken at the first twinge of pain nips things in the bud and I am good to go in about 36 hours. Hope you are good to go by the time you read this.
Wilma:
I don’t think I’d mind a muscle relaxant about now, but it’s a lot better today.
Is that pulled pork on Matzos?????
Frank:
Not quite (I don’t even think we could find matzo in our supermarkets). Those are Wasa rye/wheat crackers from Germany. Excellent.
Pulled pork only a millimetre behind a scotch egg
finlaygray:
I humbly apologise by Scotch eggs just don’t appeal to me, so pulled pork wins out.
You two eat as if you’re kings–as well you should. That recipe look great and I love pulled pork. It’s wonderful to get into bed and cuddle with a kitty, or in my case, with Penelope. Franklin could join us in bed, but he chooses not to do so.
Love,
Janie
Janie:
If it weren’t for SG, I’d be living on take-away and frozen pizzas.
Then I thank San Geraldo.
Janie:
And I do, too. Every day.
That’s called “barbecue” where Ken comes from, and we always have some in the freezer. He makes big batches of it in the slow cooker whenever pork shoulder is on sale. In fact, we’re having barbecue sandwiches for lunch today, with fries.
Walt the Fourth:
Where SG comes from, “barbecue” is what I knew as Sloppy Joe.
You mention barbecue sauce, and I sometimes wonder if THAT doesn’t have a bit of alcohol in it. I swear I get a bit of a buzz whenever I try some.
Kirk:
Well, if it’s homemade, it can. Maybe someone is spiking yours.
I remember once making shrimp steamed in beer, which sounds good, but that boiling beer sure was stinky.
Steve:
That does sound like it would stink… but maybe be delicious in the end. This was mixed so you didn’t smell any beer cooking.
